Harvey Mudd eliminates SAT/ACT requirement for Fall 2021, Fall 2022 applicants
June 19, 2020Recognizing how the COVID-19 pandemic has severely limited the ability for students worldwide to gain access to standardized testing, Harvey Mudd will be test-optional for the graduating classes of 2021 and 2022. This two-year pilot program will allow us to evaluate the role that testing plays in our admission process before we make a decision as to whether this new policy will be permanent. We hope that this change will remove one barrier and area of stress for our applicants and their families during this uncertain time. Should students choose to submit SAT or ACT scores, we will consider them, but as always, they will be only one part of our holistic application review. We know that students who were able to test will most likely not have the ability to take these tests more than once, and we will consider these scores accordingly. Students who choose not to or cannot submit SAT or ACT scores will in no way be disadvantaged in our application review process. Earlier this year, we announced that we would no longer require or consider SAT subject tests. Our hope is that students can focus their attention and energy on their safety and health as well as that of their families.
Test-Optional FAQ’s
To whom does this apply?
This policy applies to all first-year and transfer applicants to Harvey Mudd College applying in 2021 and 2022. This includes international and home schooled applicants.
To which tests does this apply?
This policy applies to the SAT and ACT only. In February, Harvey Mudd announced that we will no longer consider SAT subject tests in our admission process.
Is this a permanent change?
This is a 2-year pilot program at which point we will review our testing policy to determine if the change should be made permanent.
May I still submit test scores?
Yes, we will continue to consider submitted test scores other than the SAT subject tests. We know that some students would like to have their test scores considered, and we want to give students the choice.
How should I submit test scores?
You may either self-report or send official score reports. Only admitted students who choose to enroll at Harvey Mudd will be required to submit official score reports.
Do you still require English language proficiency exams?
Yes, international students for whom English is not a first language and who have not been studying in an English language curriculum should plan on taking either the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test.
